Hungary has officially resumed operations at its embassy in Damascus, marking a significant diplomatic step as one of the first European Union countries to restore its presence in Syria.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced the reopening, highlighting it as part of Hungary’s efforts to reestablish diplomatic ties under Syria’s new leadership.

The decision comes after the embassy was closed on December 8 amid heightened opposition attacks in Damascus and the fall of the Bashar al-Assad government.

The move follows a similar step by the Czech Republic, which reopened its embassy in Damascus after temporarily shutting it down last month.

Since the outbreak of violence in Syria in March 2011, most Arab and foreign nations had suspended diplomatic operations in Damascus, citing security concerns and the deteriorating political situation.
