Hungary has accused the European Union of conducting covert operations to influence its upcoming parliamentary elections, escalating tensions between Budapest and Brussels ahead of the April 12 vote.

EU Affairs Minister Janos Boka alleged that EU-linked actors are attempting to interfere in Hungary’s democratic process, describing the situation as contradictory to the bloc’s stated principles of trust and cooperation.

The claims echo earlier remarks by Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has accused both Brussels and Kyiv of seeking to remove his government from power.

The dispute has also drawn reaction from Washington. US Vice President JD Vance criticized EU officials, alleging that some policymakers in Brussels are pursuing actions that could harm Hungary’s economy due to political differences with Orban. He added that the United States opposes any external attempts to influence the outcome of Hungary’s elections.

The allegations come amid heightened political tensions in Hungary, where the ruling government faces a strong challenge from opposition forces in what is shaping up to be a closely contested election.

The controversy underscores growing divisions within the European Union, as questions over sovereignty, democratic standards, and external influence continue to dominate the political landscape ahead of the vote.
