The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, affirmed that the events that took place in El Fasher, Sudan, last October constituted a horrific humanitarian catastrophe that could have been avoided. He called on states to consider what they could have done to prevent the killing of thousands of civilians in El Fasher and what they will do to prevent a recurrence of such events elsewhere in Sudan.

According to the UN Information Centre, Türk noted that the Rapid Support Forces launched a wave of extreme violence, during which thousands of people were killed within a few days, and tens of thousands fled in terror after an 18-month siege. He added, "Our collective duty is to hold those responsible to account and ensure that this never happens again."

Türk referred to his recent visit to Sudan, where he heard firsthand accounts from some of the survivors of the attack, adding, "I have rarely seen people suffering from such profound trauma."
