Huge Explosion in Nightclub Rocks Azerbaijan, One Dead, 31 Injured (Videos)

A massive explosion ripped through a nightclub in Azerbaijan's capital Baku early on Sunday, killing at least one person and injuring dozens of others.

Government officials revealed that rescue workers were digging through the rubble of the capital’s building.

Media outlets reported that the explosion in the nightclub "Location Baku" happened because of a gas leak. However, the investigation is still ongoing, interior ministry spokesman, Ehsan Zahidov, told Associated Press.

The prosecutor general’s office reported one death, adding that 31 people suffered various injuries.

In the same vein, Health Ministry Spokesman Parviz Abubekirov noted that 24 people had been hospitalised, most of them with burns.

Firefighters were called to the scene in the centre of the city at 3 am and they were able to extinguish the fire before it could spread, according to the emergency services' statement.

Videos posted on social media showed dozens of people in a panic, some of them injured, running outside the club, which appeared to have been heavily damaged by the blast.
