Representative Amira Saber, a member of the House of Representatives (HoR) presented a draft law “regulating the fight against squandering of food and encouraging its redistribution, recycling, and donation.”
In the introduction to her project, the representative explained that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates the total cost of food waste globally at $ 2.6 trillion annually, which includes within it nearly $ 700 billion in the cost of environmental losses and $ 900 billion the cost of social losses.
Saber revealed that the world loses a third of what is produced (1.4 billion tons of food) each year as a result of food losses and waste.
She warned that the waste rate in Egypt is 50 kg per capita - a large percentage compared to the challenges facing Egypt related to food and water security, malnutrition, and obesity.
Saber added, “Although the rate of domestic waste in Egypt exceeds the global average, market research reveals that restaurants alone account for more than 32 percent of food waste in Egypt.
