Egypt are set to host Senegal in the first leg of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers play off, set to take place at Cairo Stadium on Friday, March 25th.

The second leg will take place on Tuesday, Match 29th in Senegal.

Ahly playmaker Magdi Afsha was recalled to Egypt’s squad for a World Cup qualifying playoff against Senegal but there was no room for teammate Mohamed Sherif despite his fine goal-scoring run of late.

Egypt coach Carlos Queiroz also included three new faces in his 23-man roster for the anticipated two-legged clash — Ahly defender Yasser Ibrahim, Pyramids FC full-back Omar Gaber and midfielder Nabil Emad.

Both teams clashed thirteen times before with the seven-time African champions winning seven, while the 2019 AFCON runner-up won four and the other two occasions ended in draws.

Egypt scored twelve goals, whereas conceding eight.

The first encounter was in the group stage of the 1986 AFCON as Senegal clinched a 1-0 win

In 1987, both teams clashed once again as the Pharaohs won 1-0. Ten years later, they played two games in the AFCON qualifiers as they held a goalless draw in the first leg, while the second leg was in Cairo, where the Pharaohs won 2-0.

In 2000, Egypt defeated Senegal in AFCON with an unanswered goal.

The six encounter was in the 2002 AFCON, in which Teranga Lions clinched their second win in the group stage.

Then, Egypt won two friendlies in 2003 (1-0), and 2005 (4-2).

Both teams met once again in the 2006 AFCON in Cairo, where Egypt defeated Senegal 2-1.

Both clashed in 2014 AFCON qualifiers, in which Senegal defeated Egypt 2-0, before repeating their win once again in the second with a 1-0 win.

The last encounter between both teams was in February in 2021 AFCON, held in Cameroon, where Senegal defeated Egypt on penalties to claim their first title.
