Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has issued a decision appointing Hisham El-Leithy as Acting Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities for a period of six months.
The decision was made based on a proposal from the competent minister and comes as El-Leithy succeeds Mohamed Ismail Khaled, who previously held the post.
In this context, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy expressed his sincere appreciation and gratitude to Mohamed Ismail Khaled for his efforts and contributions during his tenure as Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities. The minister wished him continued success in his future professional endeavors.
Hisham El-Leithy has served as Head of the Antiquities Conservation and Documentation Sector at the Supreme Council of Antiquities since 2023. He has held a number of senior leadership positions within the council throughout his career.
Between 2011 and 2015, he served as Director General of the Scientific Publishing Department. In 2015, he was appointed Director General of the Egyptian Antiquities Documentation Center, followed by his appointment in 2018 as Head of the Central Administration for Egyptian, Greek, and Roman Antiquities in Cairo and Giza.
In addition to his administrative roles, El-Leithy has overseen the Egyptian Antiquities Documentation Center, supervised museum and site storage facilities—including those of archaeological missions—and headed several archaeological missions in Upper Egypt.
