The Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean Forum opened its sessions today in Cairo with extensive participation from presidents of delegations and parliaments across Europe. The forum aims to strengthen economic and security cooperation between the two shores of the Mediterranean, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the Barcelona Process.

During a live coverage from inside the House of Representatives headquarter, it was explained that the forum witnessed wide attendance by European parliamentary leaders. It is chaired by MP Mohamed Abu El-Enein, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean . The event holds special significance due to its expected role in supporting security, peace, and economic integration in the Mediterranean region.

Reference was made to previous meetings of the association held last September in Sharm El-Sheikh under Egyptian chairmanship, which resulted in important decisions in their final statement. These included rejecting the displacement of the Palestinian people from their lands, praising the Egyptian initiative to rebuild Gaza, welcoming the United Nations' decision supporting the two-state solution, and affirming the association’s reliance on the firm Egyptian stance supporting Palestinian rights against Israeli violations.

The forum sessions feature participation from high-level delegations from various European countries, as well as heads of political and economic committees within the parliamentary assembly. The Speaker of the Egyptian House of Representatives, Counselor Hanafi El-Gebaly, is scheduled to deliver the keynote speech during tomorrow’s activities. These include important meetings of the Committees on Political and Security Affairs and Human Rights, as well as Economic, Financial, and Educational Affairs, to discuss the forum’s agenda.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean is considered a central platform for promoting peace, stability, justice, and economic integration among countries in the region. The prominent role of the Egyptian chairmanship in the assembly, and the active contribution of the Egyptian parliament in driving regional cooperation, were highly praised.
