Counselor Hesham Badawi was officially elected Speaker of Egypt’s House of Representatives for a five-year term after securing an overwhelming majority in the inaugural session of the first ordinary sitting of the third legislative term (2026–2031).
The result was announced by MP Abla El-Hawari, who chaired the opening session. Out of 570 members who cast their votes, Badawi received 521 votes, while his sole competitor, Mohamed Samy El-Imam, received 49 votes. No invalid ballots were recorded.
In accordance with Article 92 of the House’s internal regulations, the chamber had earlier approved the formation of a special committee to supervise the election process. The committee was chaired by MP Mohamed Suleiman and included several members tasked with collecting ballots, counting votes, and submitting the final report to the House.
The session also witnessed newly elected and appointed MPs taking the constitutional oath, officially marking the start of their parliamentary duties, before proceeding with the election of the Speaker and two deputies for the new legislative term.
