Heilongjiang Province has consolidated its position as China’s leading grain producer after harvesting 82 million tonnes of grain in 2025, marking the 16th consecutive year it has ranked first nationwide in total output, according to Dongbeiwang, a partner of TV BRICS.
Officials attributed the record performance to large-scale investment in high-standard farmland and near-total mechanisation of agricultural operations.
Of the province’s 14.7 million hectares of arable land, approximately 8 million hectares have been upgraded to high-standard farmland, the largest such area in China. Comprehensive mechanisation of soil preparation, sowing and harvesting has reached 99.28 per cent, placing Heilongjiang at the top nationally for modern agricultural efficiency.
Scientific and technological innovation has also played a decisive role. The contribution of technology to agricultural growth in the province has climbed to 70.8 per cent, exceeding the national average by 7.6 percentage points. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period from 2021 to 2025, the average thickness of Heilongjiang’s fertile black soil layer increased by nearly one centimetre, strengthening long-term soil productivity.
Heilongjiang is further accelerating the development of high-tech, environmentally sustainable and brand-focused agriculture. The province has become China’s largest base for organic food production, with quality inspection systems now covering more than 3.3 million hectares.
As the first province to implement a region-wide order-based agriculture model, Heilongjiang has expanded the reach of nationally branded agricultural products, boosting both domestic sales and exports. Analysts say the province’s integrated approach is reinforcing its strategic role in China’s food security and modern agricultural development.
