Heavy snowfall blanketed wide parts of Japan on Sunday, particularly along the Sea of Japan coast, while lighter snow also reached central Tokyo, raising concerns over major travel and transport disruptions.

According to Kyodo News, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued warnings of intense snowfall expected to cause significant traffic disruption in areas near Kyoto, southwestern Fukui Prefecture and eastern Tottori Prefecture. Some cities in Fukui and Tottori recorded around 30 centimeters of snow within just six hours during the morning.

In central Tokyo, approximately three centimeters of snow had fallen by 5 a.m. local time, adding to hazardous road and commuting conditions.

Forecasters said severe winter weather is likely to continue across the country on Sunday, with unstable conditions expected nationwide. Authorities urged residents to exercise caution due to the risk of traffic disruption, snowstorms and high waves.
