More than 130 people have been killed and 5,000 homes destroyed as a result of floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in Rwanda this week.
A spokesman for the Rwandan government stated that the rains, which began last Tuesday, caused floods, torrents, and landslides in the western and northern regions of the country, claiming the lives of 130 people and 77 injured, while five people were missing.
The government spokesman added that the floods destroyed more than 5,100 homes and damaged about 2,500 others.
It is noteworthy that the floods and landslides followed the heavy monsoon rains in Rwanda; as a result, at least 127 people were killed, according to the latest official toll.
Pictures published by the Rwanda Broadcasting Corporation showed destroyed homes, roads cut off by landslides, and fields flooded with water and torrents of mud.
