On Sunday, the Lebanese Ministry of Health issued a warning regarding the dangers of wild mushrooms nationwide, as a lot of poisoning cases were registered in various areas after eating toxic types of mushrooms.

In a statement, the ministry added that eating toxic types of wild mushrooms causes some serious health complications that require transferring the poisoned cases to hospitals.

It also urged the Lebanese citizens not to eat wild mushrooms, which are abundant at this time of the year, in order to preserve their health. The ministry also warned that many poisoned citizens, who ate wild mushrooms, were died.

What Are Mushrooms?

Mushrooms are technically a type of fungus, and are abundant in most parts of the world. However, they are most common in warm and wet, woodland areas.

In the U.S. alone, there are several thousand types of wild mushrooms. Around 100 of these mushrooms are poisonous to humans. We don’t know exactly how many are harmful to rabbits.

The mushrooms we get at supermarkets (I.e. button, chestnut, Portobello) are usually farmed in strict conditions. This means they are safe for human consumption, but we cannot assume these are safe for lagomorphs and other small animals.
