The celebration honors the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismael at God’s will، but before sacrificing his son، God intervened by sending his angel Jibra’il (Gabriel)، who then put a sheep in his son’s place.

In the Islamic lunar calendar، Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah. Egyptian Muslim families usually gather to feast and exchange congratulations. They typically spend time celebrating in public places around the country.

The Eid holiday coincides with the annual hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. It is noteworthy that over two million Muslim pilgrims from all over the world have gathered yesterday to ascend Mount Arafat, the main ritual of Hajj and one of the world’s largest annual gatherings.

A white-sea of worshipers do scale the rocky hill southeast of the holy city of Mecca for a day of prayers, supplicating the Almighty and asking Him for forgiveness and mercy until the sun sets.
