Mahmoud Abu Zaid, Head of the Arab Water Council (AWC) and former Minister of Irrigation of Egypt, stressed that the world is living today in an era marred by many tensions, conflicts, and economic imbalance, with a deterioration in the ecosystem and challenges resulting from climate change.
He revealed that those challenges include droughts, floods, heat waves, coldness, and water scarcity .
Dr. Mahmoud Abu Zaid's remarks came today, Friday, before he flied to Dubai to open the first Arab Water Forum, which is organized by the AWC under the auspices of the United Arab Emirates ( UAE) Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, and with the support of the League of Arab and the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation in Egypt.
Abu Zeid said that by 2030 it is expected that the effects of climate change will worsen to represent the biggest challenge to water security, which may reduce the percentage of renewable water resources by an additional 20 percent.
He warned that there is an urgent need to increase understanding of the importance of water, not only for human survival, but Also for sustainable development.
