Harvard University is facing increasing financial strain as federal funding continues to shrink under the administration of former US President Donald Trump.
In response, Harvard President Alan Garber has voluntarily agreed to reduce his annual salary by 25%, effective July 1, at the start of the new fiscal year.
Presidents of Harvard typically earn over $1 million annually, making this a significant cut in compensation.
According to university spokesperson Jonathan L. Swain, several senior leaders at Harvard have also offered to adjust their salaries in solidarity as the institution navigates ongoing fiscal pressures.
The funding crisis comes amid broader political tensions, with Trump-era policies having targeted several elite universities.
The previous administration accused top academic institutions of promoting left-leaning agendas and pressured them to dismantle diversity initiatives, adopt stricter admission policies, and alter campus conduct regulations and hiring practices.
