Experts in Argentina say a hantavirus outbreak linked to the cruise ship Hondius is now largely under control following international concern over the incident.
The Dutch-flagged vessel was travelling from Ushuaia to Cape Verde when the outbreak was detected. The World Health Organization has reported three deaths and 13 confirmed or probable cases associated with the ship.
Speaking at the annual conference of the Argentine Society of Infectious Diseases in Buenos Aires, biologist Carla Bellomo said the outbreak appears to be "largely under control."
Her assessment was echoed by Argentine health officials and infectious disease specialists, who said current evidence suggests the outbreak may not expand further.
Experts cautioned, however, that hantavirus remains a serious public health challenge requiring continued monitoring, research, and public awareness efforts.
