The government of British Columbia announced on Saturday that a Canadian citizen has tested positive for Hantavirus. The diagnosis follows the individual's departure from a luxury cruise ship that recently suffered a localized outbreak of the virus’s highly dangerous "Andes" strain.
According to health officials, the patient underwent medical evaluation and testing at a hospital in Victoria, British Columbia, where the infection was formally confirmed.
The individual had been traveling aboard the cruise vessel MV Hondius. The ship became the center of international health monitoring earlier this week after an outbreak of the Andes virus strain was identified among passengers and crew members.
The Andes strain of Hantavirus is of specific concern to global medical authorities because, unlike most other variants of the virus, it has demonstrated a capacity for person-to-person transmission. The situation has triggered heightened surveillance across North America and Europe, as health agencies race to trace contacts and isolate potential cases.
The confirmation of the Canadian case marks a widening geographic spread of individuals monitored after disembarking from the impacted vessel. Local healthcare authorities in British Columbia have stated that protocols are in place to manage the situation and mitigate any public health risks within the community.
