Hamas has strongly condemned the United States for blocking a United Nations Security Council resolution that sought an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, calling Washington’s move "complicity in genocide."
On Thursday, the UN Security Council failed to adopt the ceasefire resolution after the U.S. exercised its veto power, despite 14 out of 15 member states voting in favor. The resolution, drafted by several countries, called for an immediate end to hostilities, unrestricted humanitarian access, and the release of hostages held in Gaza.
According to the Associated Press, the U.S. argued that the proposed text failed to reflect "the security realities on the ground" and did not properly address what it described as “Israel’s right to defend itself.”
The blocked resolution described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as "catastrophic" and urged Israel to lift all restrictions impeding aid delivery to the enclave’s 2.1 million residents. The war in Gaza has now continued for nearly two years, prompting mounting international concern.
Hamas denounced the U.S. stance, stating that it directly supports the ongoing atrocities in Gaza. Human rights organizations and several international actors echoed the criticism, accusing Washington of undermining global efforts to end the suffering of civilians in the territory.
The U.S. mission to the UN defended its decision, claiming it is working on an alternative draft that balances calls for a ceasefire with guarantees for Israel’s security.
Observers noted that the veto once again highlights the diplomatic isolation of the U.S. and Israel on the international stage as the Gaza war continues to claim lives and deepen the humanitarian crisis.
