A delegation from Hamas arrived in Cairo on Tuesday evening from Doha to continue negotiations aimed at establishing a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
According to a statement from Hamas, the delegation includes Zaher Jabarin, Dr. Ghazi Hamad, and Mohammed Nasr, and is focused on "advancing efforts with the mediators in Egypt and Qatar to achieve an agreement to stop the aggression against our people in Gaza."
This arrival comes on the eve of Hamas's agreement to a proposed truce. Meanwhile, Washington has expressed hope that Israel and Hamas will be able to "bridge the remaining gaps" in the ceasefire talks.
The U.S. also noted that Israel has described its military operation in Rafah, southern Gaza, as "limited."
John Kirby, spokesperson for the National Security Council at the White House, expressed hope for a "very soon" final agreement during the talks in Cairo. He mentioned satisfaction that all concerned parties would be sending delegations to the negotiations.
Kirby reiterated that Washington opposes a "major" ground attack in Rafah and wants the border crossing with Egypt to be reopened for humanitarian aid "as soon as possible" after it was closed by the Israeli military.
