The Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, have officially announced the death of their longtime spokesperson, known as Abu Obeida, during the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza.
In an official statement, the group said Abu Obeida was killed in an Israeli airstrike, which also claimed the life of Mohammed Sinwar, a senior commander within the Al-Qassam Brigades. The announcement comes after weeks of uncertainty surrounding the fate of the masked spokesman, whose absence during key stages of the conflict raised widespread speculation.
Abu Obeida had long served as the primary public voice of the Brigades, delivering televised statements and military updates during major escalations with Israel. However, during recent phases of the war, Hamas relied largely on written statements and social media posts instead of video appearances, prompting questions about his status.
Conflicting reports circulated regarding Abu Obeida’s fate. Palestinian local media previously cited members of his family confirming that he was killed in an Israeli strike on Gaza City. At the same time, sources within Hamas offered differing accounts, neither fully confirming nor denying the reports.
The Israeli military later stated that intelligence assessments indicated Abu Obeida had been killed in the targeted operation. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz publicly confirmed the assessment approximately two days after the strike, stating that Israeli intelligence had verified his death.
Abu Obeida was considered one of the most recognizable figures of Hamas’ military wing, known for his anonymity, symbolic attire, and role in communicating official positions during conflicts. His reported death marks a significant moment in the ongoing war, as both sides continue to exchange strikes amid a deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
