Oman has named, on Saturday, Haitham bin Tariq al-Said, 65 years old, as the country’s new ruler to succeed his cousin Sultan Qaboos bin Said who died on Friday.
Who is Haitham bin Tariq?
Haitham bin Tariq, the cousin of Sultan Qaboos, held several positions in the Sultan; he is one of Sultan Qaboos's close associates and envoy; he was appointed as the Chairman of the Main Committee for the Future Vision "Oman 2040. He also served as the secretary general for the ministry of foreign affairs, and undersecretary of the ministry of foreign affairs.
He also served as the head of the Omani Football Association from 1983 till 1986 and chaired the organizing committee of the 2nd Asian Beach Games in Muscat in 2010.
He assumed the position of Minister of Heritage and Culture from February 2002 until January 11, 2020.
How Haitham bin Tariq was chosen as the successor of sultan bin Qaboos?
According to the Omani law, the royal family deliberates on a new ruler for three days, and if no consensus is reached, they must open a sealed letter from Sultan Qaboos in which he recommends his choice, Wall Street Journal reported.
The three sons of the sultan’s uncle have talked about the potential successors: Haitham bin Tariq al-Said, the culture minister; Shihab who was an adviser to the sultan; and Assad, a personal representative. The latter’s son Taimur bin Assad has also been mentioned, according to the newspaper.
After these talks and negotiations and following opening the sealed letter of Sultan Qaboos, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq was chosen as Sultan of Oman to succeed Sultan bin Qaboos.
