Libyan National Army (LNA) Commander Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar affirmed Thursday that the armed forces support the peace process in the country and exert great efforts to preserve democracy and the peaceful transfer of powers.
This came during a meeting held by Haftar in his office in Benghazi with the new head of Libyan Presidency Council Mohammad Younes Menfi, who arrived in the city earlier today from Athens.
Haftar expressed the army's full support for the new Presidency Council and the national unity government, which was formed by the political dialogue to unify institutions and bring the country together to the elections expected next December.
Upon his election, Al-Manfi pledged that the Presidency Council would be representative of all Libyans, without any discrimination or exclusion, stressing his commitment to the election dates in December, and the achievement of national reconciliation.
On the other hand; Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi congratulated Al-Menfi over the phone.
“The president congratulated Al-Manfi on the new position, wishing him success in carrying out the tasks of this new mission," spokesperson for the Presidency of the Republic Bassam Radi said.
On his part, Al-Manfi expressed appreciation for the president’s congratulations, stressing Libya’s pride in the solid fraternal relations with Egypt, and keenness to consolidate these relations and enhance cooperation frameworks between the two countries in various fields.
