Haaretz, an Israeli daily newspaper, reported today (Tuesday) that Israel has decided to appear before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague to face charges of committing genocide against civilians during the ongoing aggression against the Gaza Strip.

The lawsuit was filed by South Africa last week, according to what was reported by the Arab World News Agency.

The newspaper said that the Israeli government decided at the end of a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and after a series of consultations between the Ministry of Justice, the Israeli army, and the National Security Council, that Israel would try to prevent the court from issuing a temporary order demanding that it stop the aggression against Gaza.

Last Friday, the International Court of Justice announced that South Africa had filed a lawsuit against Israel, accusing it of committing “genocide” in the Gaza Strip.

Haaretz reported that the Israeli Attorney General's Office is concerned about the possibility of accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.

The newspaper quoted a senior legal expert as warning military personnel, including Chief of Staff Herzi Halevy, of the possibility that the court would issue a judicial order demanding that Israel cease-fire.
