United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that the world is one step away from a devastating nuclear war, noting that it is facing dangers not seen since the Cold War era.
"We've been very fortunate so far," Guterres said.
He added, "Amid rising tension in the world, humanity is one misunderstanding or one misstep away from nuclear annihilation."
Guterres made his statement at the opening of the conference of the signatories to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
The treaty was signed in 1968, after what became known as the Cuban Missile Crisis, an event that was portrayed as having come closest to triggering a global nuclear war. Later, many countries joined the treaty with the ultimate goal of preventing the spread of nuclear weapons.
Almost all countries in the world have signed up for this treaty, including the five major nuclear powers.
