Guterres Warns of Strategic Attack on Human Rights, Global Rule of Law

​United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the "current trajectory in the Occupied Palestinian Territories is glaringly clear and has a specific objective: to undermine the two-state solution, but the international community cannot allow this to happen."

​These remarks were made during his speech on Monday at the opening session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, as reported by the UN News website. Guterres highlighted the "flagrant violations of human rights, human dignity, and international law in the Occupied Palestinian Territories."

​He emphasized that human rights are being violated across the globe, stating, "Human rights are under total attack worldwide," and noting that "the law of force is increasingly prevailing over the rule of law." He added that "this attack does not come from the shadows, nor is it sudden; it happens in broad daylight and is often led by those who wield the greatest power."

​Furthermore, Guterres pointed out that "human rights are being deliberately and strategically curtailed around the world, sometimes with a sense of boastfulness." 

He concluded by saying: "We live in a world where collective suffering is justified, people are used as bargaining chips, and international law is treated as a mere nuisance," warning that "when human rights collapse, everything else collapses with them."
