UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned against the erosion of respect for international law, cautioning that such a trend could have serious consequences for civilians and global stability.
In remarks to the press at UN headquarters on Tuesday, Guterres said many are turning a blind eye to justice, pointing to the situation in the Middle East, where rules governing armed conflict and the protection of civilians are being disregarded, according to a UN statement.
He stressed that there is no military solution to the crisis, calling for the resumption of serious negotiations between the United States and Iran, the preservation of a ceasefire, adherence to international law, and the safeguarding of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
“The time has come for restraint and responsibility, and for diplomacy instead of escalation,” Guterres said.
He also announced plans to visit The Hague later this week to reaffirm his support for international law and the role of the International Court of Justice.
