United Nations Chief Antonio Guterres said that the UN peacekeeping force in the Democratic Republic of Congo will begin departing the country in an "accelerated withdrawal".
In a statement, Guterres said the Stabilization Mission deployed to DR Congo, also known as "Monusco", will leave the African country, concluding a controversial chapter but potentially leaving behind a void that could worsen the country’s violence.
Secretary-General noted that Monusco is entering "its final phase" in the DR Congo.
He also warned that "a premature departure of Monusco could have consequences for the protection of civilians."
