United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will travel to Japan next week to take part in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9).
The conference, traditionally led by Japan and co-hosted by the United Nations, the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank, and the African Union Commission, will be held this year in Yokohama from August 20 to 22 under the theme “Co-creating Innovative Solutions with Africa.”
According to UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, the Secretary-General will highlight in his opening remarks the importance of TICAD as a platform that underscores Africa’s vast potential, home to the world’s youngest population, abundant natural resources, and a vibrant spirit of entrepreneurship.
During his stay in Japan, Guterres is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with Japanese leaders and delegations attending the TICAD sessions in Yokohama.
Before returning to New York, he will visit Expo 2025 in Osaka, where he plans to tour several pavilions, including the UN Pavilion.
