Guterres to Attend Extraordinary Arab League Summit on Gaza Reconstruction

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced that he will visit Cairo next Tuesday to participate in the extraordinary summit of the Arab League, which will discuss the reconstruction of Gaza.

In remarks relayed by the UN Information Office in Cairo, Guterres emphasized that since the October 7 attacks, the ensuing hostilities have led to unprecedented levels of death and destruction in Gaza. He described Gaza as a "center of death, displacement, hunger, and disease," where hospitals, schools, and water facilities have been reduced to rubble, and the population faces the risk of further devastation.

Guterres stated that the upcoming summit presents an opportunity for Arab leaders to come together and discuss the necessary elements for achieving peace and stability in Gaza. He stressed that a unified Arab stance would help guide the way forward.

Highlighting the key priorities he will address at the summit, Guterres emphasized the need for the ceasefire agreement to hold and for the release of hostages. He warned that the coming days are critical and urged all parties to make every effort to prevent the collapse of the agreement.
