UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the world wastes far too much food every day – enough to prepare one billion meals – while leaving 9% of humanity suffering from hunger. He added that this waste jeopardizes our climate, ecosystems, and health, threatening our ability to feed ourselves in the future. His message for International Zero Waste Day, which this year highlights the escalating food waste crisis, calls on everyone to take action.
The Secretary-General further stated that consumers can make a significant impact through simple changes in their purchasing and cooking habits. He noted that this will help reduce food insecurity and the effects of climate change, preventing economic losses of up to one trillion US dollars annually. He emphasized that we cannot take food for granted.
