The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres, warned that the war in Sudan portends a “catastrophic fire” that could “engulf the entire region of the Mideast."
On the other hand, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken confirmed that his country is pressuring the Sudanese military leaders to expand the cease-fire.
Blinken expressed his "grave concern" about the deployment of Russian "Wagner" mercenary units in this Arab-African country. These separate statements came from the chief international official and the chief US diplomat, in the wake of calls by US President Joe Biden for an "immediate cease-fire" between the belligerents.
Guterres was speaking before a session held by the Security Council, yesterday (Monday), in New York at the request of the Russian presidency of the UN Security Council during the current month on “effective multilateralism by defending the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that the “situation continues to deteriorate” in Sudan.
He indicated that since the fighting began in Sudan, hundreds of people have been killed and thousands injured.
