United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that achieving the G7 summit theme of a nuclear-weapon-free world is "possible".
Guterres said in an interview with the Japanese Kyodo News Agency today / Saturday / on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) meeting that being in the city that was exposed to the first atomic bomb in the world on August 6, 1945, is "emotionally affecting."
The Secretary-General paid tribute to the courage of the atomic bomb survivors, known in Japan as hibakusha, saying that previous trips to Hiroshima had left him "deeply moved by their resilience, courage and voice".
"It should be seen by everyone in the world as a fundamental reason for denuclearization as a priority," he said.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida stressed that "achieving a world free of nuclear weapons" is a central theme of the group.
He and his G7 counterparts took a historic tour of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and met an atomic bomb survivor on Friday.
