UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has expressed serious concern regarding the Israeli military's use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their bombing campaign in the Gaza Strip. The use of AI is being used as a tool to identify targets, particularly in densely populated residential areas, leading to a high number of civilian casualties.

In a statement released to mark 6 months since the Gaza war, Guterres stated that "no life or death decisions that impact entire families should be left to the cold calculation of algorithms." He also warned against the weaponization of AI and the reduction of the essential role of human agency.

The UN Chief emphasized the importance of using AI as a positive force to benefit the world, rather than contributing to industrial-scale warfare and blurring accountability.

"AI should be used as a force for good to benefit the world; not to contribute to waging war on an industrial level, blurring accountability."
