UN Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a stern call to the Israeli government, urging it to take "concrete and immediate steps" to stop and prevent all acts of violence by settlers against Palestinians. The appeal comes in the wake of a deadly incident in the occupied West Bank that has drawn sharp international condemnation.
According to a report by Youm7 on Saturday, February 21, 2026, Guterres condemned the killing of a young Palestinian man, identified as Nasrallah Abu Siam, in the village of Mikhmas, located east of occupied Jerusalem. Citing the Palestinian news agency (WAFA), the UN chief expressed deep concern over the escalating trend of settler-led attacks on Palestinian communities.
Demand for Accountability
The Secretary-General called for a "swift, thorough, and transparent investigation" into the circumstances of the shooting. He emphasized the necessity of holding those responsible for the violence accountable to prevent a culture of impunity from taking root.
"The Israeli government has a responsibility to ensure the safety and security of the protected population under its occupation," a UN spokesperson stated on behalf of Guterres.
Rising Tensions in the West Bank
Settler violence has been a recurring flashpoint in the region, often leading to broader escalations. Guterres reiterated that such acts not only violate international law but also undermine the prospects for a viable two-state solution. The international community is being urged to maintain pressure on the Israeli administration to de-escalate tensions and provide adequate protection for Palestinian civilians living near settlement blocs.
