United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the need for Israel to withdraw from South Lebanon according to the agreed schedule, stressing the importance of respecting Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
During a press conference in Beirut, Guterres expressed optimism about the new Lebanese government’s ability to meet the aspirations of its people and maintain the country’s sovereignty.
He highlighted the necessity of adhering to the cessation of hostilities and fulfilling agreed commitments, stating, “There are ongoing violations of the ceasefire in Lebanon, and Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected. All weapons should be confined to the Lebanese Army.”
Guterres called on the international community to support the Lebanese Army, emphasizing the need to ensure the safety and security of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). He noted that the Lebanese Army, in cooperation with UNIFIL, would assume control over the area south of the Litani River. He clarified that there were no plans to increase the number of UNIFIL personnel but rather to enhance their capabilities and equipment.
“The Israeli forces will leave Lebanon, and I am confident of this. I see no reason for Israel not to withdraw and for the Lebanese Army not to deploy in the south,” Guterres stated.
He also assured that UNRWA would continue its operations in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Gaza, reaffirming that humanitarian aid would reach Gaza without hindrance under the ceasefire agreement.
