Gunmen in Niger killed at least 22 civilians in southwestern Niger, on Sunday, less than a week after 58 villagers were killed in the same area by unknown assailants, media sources said.

The attackers raided 3 villages in the Tillabéri Region, which borders Mali and Burkina Faso.

A security source said that armed men from ISIS launched the attacks, two local sources did not specify who was responsible.

Alfouzazi Issintag, mayor of Tillia confirmed to "Reuters" that there were many deaths, but he did not specify how many.

The local branch of the "ISIS" organization is active in the region, and it was blamed for previous attacks that claimed the lives of dozens of civilians and soldiers.

The violence is part of a wider security crisis in the Sahel region of West Africa, which is also fueled by extremists linked to Al Qaeda and ethnic militias, According to Sky News.
