Gunmen killed 10 people and wounded two others at a busy intersection in the city of Bamenda in the volatile region, the governor of Cameroon's Northwest region said on Monday.

A witness said the attackers arrived in cars late on Sunday and ordered people to lie down on the ground, accusing them of not supporting separatists in the area. They opened fire while some obeyed and others ran.

The main separatist group in Anglophone Ambazonia, which has been fighting since 2017 to protest alleged marginalization by the mostly French-speaking government, denied responsibility for the incident.

North West region governor Adolphe Lele Lafrique told Reuters that a manhunt had been launched for the "terrorists" behind the massacre. "Investigations are on, and we will issue a statement on this later today," he added.

The witness noted that men in military uniforms arrived in two vehicles and drove towards Nacho Intersection, where there are restaurants, bars, and shops, at around 1830 GMT.

The witness added that they shot people randomly before they left.

More than 6,000 people have been killed in Cameroon's Anglophone regions since the conflict erupted in 2017 after protests were violently suppressed.
