Police in the United States have confirmed that a gunman killed six members of the same family before dying by suicide in a series of shootings in the state of Iowa.
According to local authorities, the incident is believed to have stemmed from a family dispute, based on initial findings of the investigation.
The suspect, identified as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland from Muscatine in eastern Iowa, fled the scene before officers arrived but was quickly identified by law enforcement.
Police said the situation ended when the suspect took his own life during an attempted negotiation with officers near a river walkway along the Mississippi River.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
