German University in Cairo (GUC) hosted over the last four days the activities of the winter school titled “Data Science for a Better Future”.

The event "winter school" brought together a galaxy of researchers, industry experts, and students from Egypt and around the world to discuss how data science can be used to address environmental challenges, according to Amr El-Mougy, Vice Dean of Media Engineering and Technology faculty at GUC.

He added that data science is "the 21 century’s oil", noting that it focuses mainly on knowledge and understanding of data and its analysis in order to explain the actual phenomena to make informed decisions and avoid problems via following a specific scientific methodology.

Moreover, the GUC official pointed out that the workshop organized a scientific platform to present examples of environmental issues that have been addressed using machine learning and data science.

In addition, the workshop included lectures on ways to use data science in facing environmental challenges resulting from climate change, such as environmental pollution, and forest fires resulting in the destruction of ecosystems.

Additionally, El-Mougy underlined the importance of holding such workshops to confront the current challenges.

A competitive competition on environmental sustainability, sponsored by Raisa Energy LLC, was held on the sidelines of the workshop with a $5500 worth prize, to encourage the participants to innovate great solutions that could be used to solve our environmental problems, according to El-Mougy.
