Greenland’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Natural Resources, Naaja Nathanielsen, said that national sovereignty remains a “red line” for her country, stressing that Greenland is an integral part of the Kingdom of Denmark and that no external power has the right to make decisions on its behalf.

In remarks made during a televised interview, Nathanielsen warned that former U.S. President Donald Trump does not place significant weight on issues of national sovereignty, airspace, or cultural identity, describing this approach as a source of concern for Greenlandic authorities when discussing any potential future agreements with the European Union or the United States.

She said the Greenlandic government has been clear from the outset about its position, noting that the prime minister has emphasized firm red lines related to sovereignty. “Greenland is an inseparable part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and no country can act on our behalf or violate our sovereignty,” she said.

Nathanielsen added that while Greenland values international dialogue and does not oppose discussions with global partners, any infringement on national sovereignty is “completely unacceptable.” She noted that this firm stance has caused discomfort for some countries that tend to downplay the importance of Greenland’s culture and national identity.

The minister stressed that the people of Greenland are not merely “a piece of ice,” but a nation with a deeply rooted culture and distinct identity. She underscored that sovereignty must remain central to all future dealings and negotiations, warning that Greenland would respond decisively to any attempt to undermine it.
