In a significant operation today, the Greek Coast Guard reported the rescue of 48 migrants off the coast of Lesvos Island, near the Turkish shoreline. These individuals were aboard an inflatable boat when spotted by authorities.

According to the Coast Guard's official statement, one of their patrol vessels, while on its routine surveillance near the island, sighted the boat early this Sunday. Quick actions by the patrol ensured the migrants were saved before their rubber vessel could sink.

The release further detailed that the ship's crew evacuated all 48 individuals, subsequently transferring them to the port of Mytilene. Additionally, three migrants were urgently moved to the city's general hospital for necessary medical care and remain under observation.

While the statement didn't specify the nationalities of the rescued migrants, a video clip shared on YouTube, cited by the Associated Press, indicated that most appear to be of African origin.

The incident reaffirms the challenges faced in the Mediterranean region, as individuals seek better lives, often undertaking perilous journeys in treacherous conditions.
