The Greek government is moving towards stricter regulations on electric scooters following a series of deadly accidents involving children and teenagers.
The proposed measures come after the death of a 13-year-old boy in the region of Ilia and a serious collision involving another child, aged 12, in Aspropyrgos.
According to Greek newspaper Kathimerini, the Ministry of Transport is considering a complete ban on e-scooter use for anyone under the age of 18. Authorities are also reviewing mandatory insurance for adult riders and higher fines for both users and scooter rental companies.
Deputy Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis is expected to present the proposed legislation in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis stressed that electric scooters must operate “at a level of safety” and described banning minors from using them as a top priority.
He also raised concerns about accountability in road accidents involving scooters, asking: “If an e-scooter hits you today, who will compensate you?”
