Greece's authorities have evacuated approximately 2,500 people from the Greek island of Corfu as wildfires continue to spread across the island.

This comes after thousands of residents fled the nearby island of Rhodes in an unprecedented operation amid scorching temperatures.

Greek authorities transported nearly 2,500 individuals to safety on Monday as forest fires raged during an intense heatwave on the island of Corfu.

The evacuations took place while firefighting teams battled 82 fires throughout Greece, including 64 fires that started on Sunday, the hottest day in the country so far this year.

Temperatures in Greece exceeded 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in many regions last week, with more hot weather forecasted in the coming days.

The operation in Corfu followed the evacuation of around 19,000 people from several locations on the island of Rhodes, described by the police as the largest wildfire evacuation in Greece's history.

Both Rhodes and Corfu are among the top tourist destinations in Greece, especially popular among visitors from the United Kingdom and Germany.

Additional areas on Rhodes were evacuated on Monday due to the ongoing fires, which continue to pose a significant threat to the island.
