The Senate confirmed on Thursday the appointment of former Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm as secretary of Energy.

President Joe Biden's pick "Granholm", who won with 64-35 vote, will lead the US policies away from fossil fuels to achieve a carbon-free energy sector by 2035.

Granholm is a staunch clean energy advocate, and she worked with auto makers to push the industry toward electrification during her two terms as governor from until 2011.

She cited solutions such as blue hydrogen to create jobs, which requires equipment manufacturing.

The energy secretary will be tasked with addressing demands for more energy regulation in response to the unprecedented winter storm in Texas that caused one of the worst blackouts in the country.

"Whether it's wildfires in California or snowstorms in Texas, we need to upgrade our network infrastructure as quickly as possible," she wrote last week.
