Al-Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed El-Tayyeb received on Wednesday, Mr. Gareth Bailey, the UK Ambassador to Egypt, at the sheikhdom headquarters.
During the meeting, they discussed ways to enhance cooperation between both sides.
At the outset of the meeting, the Grand Imam expressed Al-Azhar’s keenness to enhance scientific and cultural cooperation with the UK, based on the belief in the necessity of civilized communication between the East and the West.
Moreover, the Grand Imam expressed his happiness about the keenness of His Royal Highness Prince Charles, Crown Prince of the UK to visit Al-Azhar Al-Sharif during his trip to Egypt, a matter which reflects the great admiration paid by him to this holy place.
On his part, the British ambassador expressed his happiness with this important meeting, as well as his great appreciation for the Grand Imam’s efforts in promoting interfaith dialogue and delivering the correct image of Islam to the whole world.
Moreover, he stressed the UK’s keenness to develop scientific cooperation with Al-Azhar because of its key role in promoting dialogue and communication between different religions and cultures across the world.
In addition, Mr. Bailey officially invited El-Tayyeb to visit the Oxford Center for Islamic Studies in the UK and deliver a speech on the role of Islam in protecting the environment and addressing the challenges of climate change.
