His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, departed this afternoon for Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia as part of a tour of Southeast Asia, which includes Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. The tour follows several official invitations extended by the three countries. During his visit, the Grand Imam will meet with senior officials and religious, cultural, and political leaders.
While in Kuala Lumpur, the Grand Imam is scheduled to meet with the Malaysian Prime Minister, Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and hold meetings with religious and cultural leaders, as well as civil society institutions in Malaysia. The discussions will focus on enhancing the role of Al-Azhar, leveraging its extensive expertise, expanding its educational and religious services in Malaysia, and establishing a larger number of Al-Azhar centers for Arabic language education in Malaysia.
The Grand Imam is also keen to engage with Malaysian youth and discuss contemporary societal issues while also holding several meetings with Islamic studies students and researchers at Malaysian universities.
