Tech giant Google has announced a $100 million annual commitment to support Canadian media by distributing its content on its digital platforms.
The company revealed that the funds have been allocated to the Canadian Journalism Collective, a nonprofit organization managed by independent publishers and broadcasters.
The collective has confirmed plans to distribute the first installment of the funds to eligible media outlets by the end of January 2025.
This initiative follows a landmark agreement reached in November 2023 between Google and Canadian authorities.
Under this agreement, Google must provide $100 million annually to bolster Canada’s media industry, in compliance with new regulations mandating financial contributions from major digital platforms for hosting and sharing news content.
The agreement aligns with Canada’s Online News Act, which mandates that large digital platforms negotiate fair licensing deals with local media outlets to protect copyright and ensure equitable use of news content.
