Google Maps, one of the world’s most widely used navigation and travel tools, is preparing to roll out a new feature that will give users greater control over the data they contribute to the platform.
Much of Google Maps’ success is built on user-generated information, ranging from accident reports and traffic conditions to public transport updates.
These real-time contributions play a key role in improving navigation accuracy and enhancing the overall user experience.
Until now, however, users had limited control over these submissions. Once a report was sent, it could not be manually deleted.
Accident reports, for example, would only disappear gradually based on confirmations or rejections from other users, with no direct option for removal.
That may soon change. According to a report by Android Authority, code discovered in the latest beta version of Google Maps (v26.04.01) suggests that Google is working on a new option that will allow users to delete all of their road-related contributions.
The feature is expected to cover all types of reports, including accidents, road conditions, public transportation updates, and other travel-related issues.
Users will reportedly be able to access this option through Settings > Location & Privacy, where they can remove all of their active contributions.
Once deleted, these reports will no longer be linked to the user’s account after they expire.
The ability to delete contributions marks a significant improvement in user experience, particularly for those who may have submitted reports by mistake or no longer see a need for them.
However, the feature currently does not appear to allow the deletion of individual reports, such as removing a single accident report sent earlier, which could be useful for quick error correction.
Overall, the move is seen as a step forward in enhancing privacy and giving users a stronger sense of control over their data while maintaining the accuracy and reliability of navigation information.
It also signals Google’s continued focus on providing a safer and more flexible experience for Google Maps users worldwide.
