Google announced plans to roll out a new set of mental health-focused features within its AI chatbot Gemini, as the tech giant moves to address growing scrutiny over the psychological impact of artificial intelligence tools.

In an official statement, Google said the updated Gemini interface will guide users to mental health support resources if the system detects signals indicating self-harm or suicidal intent. The move comes amid a rise in legal challenges against AI platforms, with claims that such tools have contributed to harm in vulnerable users.

Among the new additions is a dedicated section titled “Help is Available,” which will appear in conversations related to mental health. The company is also implementing changes aimed at reducing responses that could encourage or reinforce harmful behaviors.

The update reflects broader concerns surrounding the rapid adoption of AI systems such as Gemini and ChatGPT. Reports have suggested that some users have developed emotional attachments to these platforms, an issue cited in lawsuits alleging that AI interactions exacerbated hallucinations or delusional thinking in individuals with pre-existing mental health conditions.

In one recent case in Florida, the family of a 36-year-old man filed a lawsuit against Google, claiming Gemini contributed to a “rapid escalation of violent behavior” that ended in suicide within days. The company has stated that the chatbot repeatedly directed the user to crisis support services and emphasized its ongoing efforts to strengthen safety mechanisms.

Google also noted that it has trained Gemini to avoid affirming false beliefs and to distinguish between subjective experiences and objective facts, while maintaining a supportive and empathetic tone. However, the company did not disclose detailed technical specifics بشأن how these safeguards are implemented.

The initiative builds on earlier efforts by Google to integrate verified mental health information into its services, including search results and content on YouTube, following past criticism over the handling of sensitive health-related content.
